As good as a Strad

Every maker of stringed

instruments dreams that one day a creation of his will be mistaken for a Stradivarius. In the case of a cello by Colin irving the dream came true in1973.

The owner of an Irving cello tried to get a seat for the cello in the passenger section of an aircraft, and in doing so said it was a Strad and more valuable than the plane.

The remark was overheard by a musicologist  who was arranging a concert for the owner of the Irving cello in Accademia Monteverdiana ,at a festival in the South of France. The rumour of the Strad spread like an epidemic. A speech was made about the instrument and its noble origin, before it was played,and numerous cognoscenti were completely taken in, including the critic of Le Figaro.
